About the Artist:

Ray spent a career as a high shcool music teacher while maintaining a creative interest in working with wood. Creating the masks came from a fascination with Native American figures as well as rock art throughout New Mexico. The masks are made of natural aspen tree trunks and are stylized to depict the Native American culture. Ray created “The Safety in Numbers Series,” three years ago from watching the BBC Blue Planet T.V. production. From his observation of schooling herring being chased to the waters surface, he wanted to replicate this natural occurrence in his Art. The work results in a stylized interpretation of the phenomenon.
